This Black History Month, we want to put the spotlight on some of the UK celebrities that have made a huge impact on the entertainment industry and are proud to be from the Caribbean islands of St Kitts and Nevis.

It’s no coincidence that an island bursting with personality has created some firm fixtures in the world of music, television and sport.

St Kitts and Nevis is famous for blue seas and fine sandy beaches, as well as a gorgeous green mountain chain, in particular the mighty Nevis Peak that sits overlooking the island of Nevis. As well as being host to some of the most idyllic landscapes, it also has a big part to play in claiming some of the UK’s most loved personalities.

Melanie Brown MBE

Mel B is an ambassador for the island of Nevis, the island of which her Father was born. She has taken on the role to raise awareness of the island all its beauty. From visiting to spend time with her Grandmother, who at one point was the oldest person on the island, to taking family holidays and soaking up the island’s wellness offering for some moments of R&R, Melanie calls the island her second home.

Marcus Rashford MBE

One of the UK’s much-loved footballers, playing for Manchester United, has not only made a name for himself on the pitch but also as a social activist.

Off the pitch Marcus has become a symbol of advocacy for children’s food poverty issues both in the UK and in St Kitts & Nevis. In the UK he uses his platform to campaign for access to free school meals for underprivileged children as well as fighting against racism and homelessness. Across the pond in St Kitts & Nevis, he and his mother regularly send clothes to children’s homes.

Micah Richards

Sport’s funny man, with a big personality, is typical of the people of St Kitts & Nevis. Micah Richards was commonly known for his part on the field with Manchester City, now he’s a pundit and pod caster alongside Gary Lineker and he’s entertaining viewers while doing so. Micah is proud to be from St Kitts and Nevis and proudly supports the national team, of which his first cousin was formerly a player.

Joan Armatrading CBE

Joan Anita Barbara Armatrading is a singer-songwriter and guitarist, from St Kitts & Nevis.

The three-time Grammy Award nominee has also been nominated twice for BRIT Awards as Best Female Artist. She received an Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contemporary Song Collection in 1996 and has a recording career spanning nearly 50 years, having released 20 studio albums, as well as several live albums and compilations.

In addition to these trailblazers, some other celebrities from St Kitts & Nevis are:

Devon Anderson, Rhea Bailey, Nicola Adams, Joey Benjamin, Pippa Bennett-Warner, Michelle Gayle, Robbie Gee, Angela Griffin, Lady Leshurr, Laura Mvula, Simon Webbe, Keisha White.

As part of the Black History Month celebration, Spotify UK is using the period to highlight creative Nevisians, as part of an incredible billboard campaign highlighting podcasts produced and hosted by Black women.

Until October 22nd three podcasts, produced and presented by Nevisians can be seen side by side on billboards in London, Cardiff and Glasgow. These are The *(Relate)able Podcast by Chantal Olivia Miller, Sherween Gonzales and Fiona Compton, Let’s Make it Rain Podcast by Davinia Tomlinson and the Wanna Be By Podcast by Imriel Morgan.
