Terry Elkins is an artist based in New York. He and his wife first visited Nevis on their honeymoon in January of 2018.

My wife and I first visited Nevis on our honeymoon in January of 2018. We stayed at the Four Seasons. What’s not to like about that place? We toured the island and enjoyed meeting the people. Nevisians are friendly, courteous, and very likable.

I’m a professional artist so, as I always do, I packed some watercolors. However, I accidentally left my paper at home. The hotel referred me to Deborah Tyrell who runs The Charlestown Gallery. We met her at her at her gallery in the center of town, and she was more than willing to share some paper with me. The gallery is well worth a visit.

While we were on the island, I developed an irregular heartbeat. I was taken to the emergency room at the local hospital. As a former EMT with a volunteer fire department, I’ve spent hundreds of hours helping patients in the ER. And I felt very comfortable and well taken care of in the small, well-equipped hospital. The doctors did what was necessary and sent me back to my hotel. (Long story short, I was fine, and we enjoyed the rest of our honeymoon.)

Three months later, we returned to Nevis and stayed at Montpelier Plantation. The staff treated us like family, and I painted this picture of their beach:

At the Montpelier, my wife and I met Kanrauwn David who is, without a doubt, the best bartender on Nevis. During this second visit, we also rented a car from Marlon Brando. When I met him I said, “Wow you’re Marlon Brando? You’re famous, I’ve seen your star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame!” Marlon cracked the biggest smile, and when I asked him for his autograph, he was so tickled.

Renting a car allowed us to take a better look at the entire island. We checked out several restaurants, saw many interesting places, and enjoyed a private rum tasting with Richie Lupinacci at The Hermitage. This was an amazing treat, and he could not have been more hospitable.

We were hooked and began to think about the possibility of having our own place there. By last fall, we were back on the island again, seriously looking. In our three short visits, we’ve gotten to know so many wonderful people. We’ve been to a few other places in the Caribbean, but my wife and I discovered that the people of Nevis are the best. That’s probably what we loved most about the island.

We’ve fallen in love with Nevis and it’s people, and we’re looking forward to our next visit which will be soon. To be continued …
