Mangoes, Mangoes Everywhere!
Did you know that the tiny island of Nevis is home to some of the world’s best tasting mangoes? More surprising, still, is that the island boasts more than 44 varieties of mango, each with its own distinctive flavor, texture and name. Some of the more popular are Amory Polly, Julie, and Graham, but there are literally mangoes to suit every taste bud and you’re sure to find your favorite.
Every year, Nevis celebrates mangoes at the peak of their ripeness in July with the Nevis Mango & Food Festival. This event, now in its fifth year, will take place July 4-7 and will once again bring together international superstar chefs like UK Iron Chef Judy Joo, host of the Food Channel’s “Korean Food Made Simple,” cookbook author, restaurateur and frequent guest on The Food Network and national morning shows. Chef Judy heads the line-up of international and local chefs who prepare soups, desserts, entrees and cocktails with this delicious fruit, although locals prefer to eat it fresh off the tree.
This exciting festival is part of the Nevis Tourism Authority’s focus on Culinary Wellness, which is evident in all of the fabulous restaurants, beach bars and healthy food experiences to be had all over Nevis. Fresh fruits and vegetables and incredible fish caught each day from local waters make for palate-pleasing meals. And combine that with wellness activities like spa treatments, yoga classes, outdoor rainforest hikes and garden walking tours – not to mention all of the beach and water activities – and you’re in for a fantastic vacation.
